Wow, talk about having some different weather today. It was clear but windy when I got up, the first photo in the Port Fairy group was taken at Apollo Bay at 8.30am and it’s very definitely blue sky. The photos of the leafless trees were taken part way up the hill at 8.52 and it was looking a little cloudy. By 9.28am when I took the photo of the Lavers Hill (which isn’t big enough to rate as a town) sign, I was in thick cloud and it took a good 15 – 20 mins to get out of the cloud. I was concerned when I came across a sign warning of cows crossing the road and thought all I needed was large moving obstacles that I couldn’t see….yippee.
But is was spectacular scenery overload, even with moments of cloudy sky and then moments of blue sky. The 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Port Campbell Lookout, The Arch The Grotto, Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands. I didn’t stop at London Bridge because the last time I saw it (back in the 80’s) it still had it’s bridge but since the bridge has collapsed it’s just a lump of rock so I boycotted. I haven’t walked so much in months and kept on bumping into the same people at each location.
I stopped in at Princetown which makes Lavers Hill look like a city in comparison, I mean you driving into the ‘town’ and it’s literally a no through road. Went through Port Campbell and Warrnambool and was intending to get to Portland but by 2.30pm I’d had enough and Port Fairy is really pretty so am stopping here for the night. I drove all of 190kms today and it took me 7 hours but there was a lot of stops along the way and given that until Warrnambool I had the road pretty much to myself there was some dodgy stops and u-turns along the way. Safety was always paramount, it was just the road rules that got flaunted….oops!
I had a wonder around the main streets and drove around the town – the eastern beach and the southern beach, the wharf etc. There are some amazing buildings here – new and old – beautiful cottages and houses, really diverse range of eras but very pretty.
Heading into SA tomorrow, which means my trip is nearly at an end and I’ll have to become responsible and join the work force again…..damnit.
