Final Wrap – The Great Lindy Road Trip

October 6, 2013

So here’s what I’ve learnt on this trip:

  • The thought of driving 3000kms was much more daunting than actually driving it especially when it’s done in small chunks
  • I drove a total of 4005kms
  • I will never do a drive like that again unless I have cruise control….I doubt my ankle will ever be the same
  • I’ve now done the entire eastern coast from Cooktown to Adelaide
  • I’m amazed at the old cars on the roads in SA and I’m not talking vintage cars….just regular old heaps of shit.  I’ve come to the conclusion that all the traded in cars in Australia end up in Adelaide.  Don’t ever start up a new card dealership, you’ll go broke in a hurry.
  • Surprisingly, Adelaide drivers are much more aggressive and cut in much closer, while Brisbane-ites drive faster
  • I had no idea SA had so many bugs.  I’m constantly washing the windscreen.
  • The roads in Adelaide are shite, which probably explains why the cars are crap.
  • However, the bike paths are excellent
  • For the state that is known as the crow eaters, the crows are much fewer and half the size of the crows in Brisbane….yay!!
  • Peak hour traffic here is like a Sunday morning in Brisbane….okay make that Saturday morning traffic (it might be different if I was talking peak hour into the CBD in Adelaide)
  • The Great Ocean Road is such a spectacular piece of coastline, not matter how many times you see it
  • While I was quite happy to flaunt, break and totally disregard a whole stack of road rules, just to get a photo, I always made sure that the said rules were broken safely!
  • I missed yellow
  • I was amazed at how green SA is, for that matter the bulk of the country I drove through was the most beautiful vibrant green
  • I’m starting to think I lived a very insular existence in Brisbane, never really venturing into the ‘burbs’
  • The comment about yellow, just in case you were wondering, refers to yellow in nature…..wattles, fields of canola, soursobs (yes I know they are a weed but en masse, they are very pretty) and you don’t see them so much in Queensland

Well I’m sure that’ enough learning for one trip and you’ve probably read more than enough for one blog.   I’m going to endeavour to do a monthly blog to keep in touch with everyone….don’t hold your breath but I’ll give it a whirl.
