February 2014

It’s going to be a short one this month…..is that cheering I heard??

Wow, I know February is a short month but really, that just flew by.  I didn’t get up to much because I spent way too much time and petrol driving around the northern, eastern and western suburbs of Adelaide looking for somewhere to live. I decided that I was over living out woop-woop and wanted to be closer to the city, which meant being the city side of Grand Junction Road.  Because I didn’t have a specific suburb in mind I drew a line through the centre of the CBD and decided anything on the left side of the map was fair game.  Which really wasn’t doing myself any favours because that made the search area massive.  It’s taken me the best part of 2 months to find somewhere and yes, I admit I’ve been pretty fussy but I’ve looked at whole lot of dumps and in the end, to prove it wasn’t just me, I even took Mum and Dad along to a couple of places.  The Real Estate Industry really needs to be taken to task over putting up photos of places that are several years old.  Some of them are showing photos just after they’ve been renovated but that was years ago and being rentals, it’s been trashed in the meantime….hence my prolonged frustration at finding somewhere.  But I’ve finally made my 21st move and am settled in and the place looks like I’ve lived here for years.  I’m in Enfield now and while it’s 30 minutes closer to the city, it’s only an extra 5kms to work…..yay!

I did do a few things besides house hunting…..although not a lot.  On the first Saturday of the month I got up obscenely early on what was going to be another 45° day and headed down to Brighton Beach to make photos of the sculptures on the beach (and no, not sand sculptures).   One Sunday morning I met a mate, Bronco and his dog down a Largs and we too Buddy for a walk along the beach and had breakfast at the Largs Pier Hotel.  It was a great morning and even greater to catch up.  I talked Jen (sister) into going into town to the Night Markets on North Tce, which were predominantly food vans with a few craft stalls thrown in (we were expecting it to be the other way round).  But it was so nice to sit on the grass listening to great music and eating excellent food and not feeling like we were in the city.  I also caught up with a few friends at the opening night of Adelaide Festival at the free concert in Elder Park.  Not sure who the first band was but they didn’t really float my boat however the main attraction – Kid Creole and the Coconuts (I’d never heard of them) – were brilliant and we were all on our feet dancing under the stars, finished off with fireworks.  Excellent night.

That pretty much caps off the activities for the month although I did go to the movies and saw Tracks, the Australian film about the girl who walks camels across the desert.  Good film, really enjoyed it, obviously it’s a bit slow – she is walking across desert – with some awesome scenery.  I also saw The Monuments Men last week and I loved it.  Very funny and really interesting.  Given that one of my goals is to see the top ten art galleries in the world and have so far been to four of them, I was quite moved by the film because without these men I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy so much of the amazing art in Italy and Paris.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
